Fruit! The food divinely crafted for humans (part 1)
I am a fruitarian.
Some of you may never have encountered this word. Others may have encountered it, perhaps even dabbled in this approach. Few will have considered that it is unequivocally, undeniably the diet divinely designed for humans. So what is a fruitarian? Well, as the name implies, a fruitarian is someone who eats almost exclusively fruit. Occasional raw veggies, nuts and seeds may be part of a fruitarian’s diet, but the overwhelming majority of nutrition comes from fruit.
Now before you run screaming from this page, let’s unpack this a bit more thoroughly. Because I wasn’t always this way. In fact, for much of my young life, late teens through into my mid 20s, I lived almost exclusively on microwave meals, ramen noodles, pizza and booze. I’m not sure I had a piece of fruit or a vegetable for over a decade. If I did, I promise you it was accidental. Then something happened. I developed severe, crippling abdominal pain literally overnight. I went to bed fine, and woke up in blinding agony. The doctor told me it was IBS and put me on some drugs. I attempted to carry on as I was for 2 years, but life was increasingly impossible. When I’d have an ‘attack’, I would have to stop whatever I was doing, and lie down in a fetal position on the floor, so bad was the pain. Without satisfactory answers from the mainstream medical community, I did something I had not previously considered. I turned to the holistic medical community. I was immediately directed to address my diet, something I had also not really thought about up to this point. So began a journey of healing with food that has lasted almost 20 years and has brought me to this point where I want to share my wealth of knowledge and experience in this realm to help others recover from similarly debilitating conditions.
So what was my primary issue at this time? Put simply, ignorance. Like all people, I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I’d never been exposed to ideas about health and nutrition that actually had a chance of working. It had never occurred to me not to listen to whatever the mainstream medical establishment told me was the best path to take. I had never really considered that the SHIT I was consuming every single day had in any way any impact on my overall health. At the time I worked out a lot and was in good shape, and I figured exercise was the sole determinant of health. I now think very differently.
There is a wonderful saying in the recovery community: ‘Contempt prior to investigation.’ Be honest with yourself, how many times do you reject out of hand something that doesn’t fit with your worldview, when if you really were pushed, you’d have to admit you actually don’t know anything about it. When this happens, it is possible that you are operating more from programs in your brain than from actual clear critical independent thinking. I say this because a lot of what I say in this article, your mind will outright reject. Do me a favor, read to the end, sit with the information and experience I’m sharing, and see how it lands on you over time when you allow yourself to do that.
Let’s start with this. Where would you say that humans land in terms of genetic makeup when it comes to food? Some of you would say that humans are carnivores. Many of you would say that humans are omnivores. Some might even say that humans are herbivores. So which is the answer? if you answered, D. None of these, you are correct. Humans are in fact frugivores. That’s probably a word many of you have never even heard. How funny that this would be the case, when it describes the very species you are a part of.
Let’s go through the other options. Humans are not carnivores, as much as there is a fashionable trend right now to convince people that they are. What is the reason for this? Because many people see incredible results (IN THE SHORT TERM!) when they switch to a carnivore diet. Health issues that they have been struggling with seem to magically disappear overnight. In truth, they have not disappeared, they have simply been supressed, pushed back into the body to be dealt with later. Because the process of detoxification was arrested, they will likely emerge later as cancer, or some other far worse condition. It is a true ‘living on credit’ approach to health, and the bill WILL come, sooner or later. So why does eating meat alone reduce symptoms for so many people? Because it slows down and clogs up all the systems in the body. It forces the body to put far more effort into digestion (many on the carnivore diet experience chronic constipation due to the complete absence of fiber) and to put on hold all other efforts to heal, purge and eliminate, which in truth is what the symptoms were in the first place.
So beyond this, why are humans not carnivores? Because the design of the human body bears absolutely no resemblance to that of a carnivore. Carnivores are stocky, and move on four legs to accentuate bursts of speed to capture their prey. Carnivores have huge incisors to tear through flesh, and their jaw is structured differently so that they can grind and tear. Carnivores have protein receptors on their tongues, so that they are encouraged by nature to eat the food that they consume. Carnivores have very short intestinal systems so that they can move the food through their digestive system before it starts to putrefy and cause health issues. There are other components, but these are the basics.
